Stock Profit Calculator

What This Calculator Shows You

Most brokers show you a basic profit or loss figure, but they don't always account for brokerage fees on both legs of the trade, or for capital gains tax on the profit. This calculator gives you the full picture: gross P&L, net P&L after fees, return percentage, break-even price, and after-tax profit.

How to Use This Calculator

  • Buy Price — the price per share you paid when you entered the position.
  • Sell Price — the price per share at exit (or your target sell price if planning a trade).
  • Number of Shares — total shares in the position.
  • Brokerage Fee — flat fee charged per transaction. Applied twice: once at buy, once at sell.
  • Capital Gains Tax % — your applicable tax rate on the profit. Set to 0 if you're in a tax-sheltered account.

What Is the Break-Even Price?

The break-even price is the minimum sell price at which you neither gain nor lose money, after accounting for both brokerage fees. It is always slightly above your buy price. If you set a stop-loss, it should never be below this figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Break-even price is the minimum sell price at which you neither gain nor lose money, after accounting for brokerage fees on both buy and sell. It is always slightly above your buy price. Your stop-loss should never be set below this figure.
Brokerage fees are charged twice — once when you buy and once when you sell. On small positions, fees can eat a significant percentage of your profit. This calculator applies the fee to both legs of the trade so you see your true net P&L.
After-tax profit is calculated by applying your capital gains tax rate to the net profit (after fees). If you are investing in a tax-sheltered account such as an ISA or 401k, set the tax rate to 0%.

Worked Example

Lena bought 50 shares of AAPL at $165 and sold them at $210. Her broker charges $7.99 per trade and she's on a 15% capital gains tax rate. The trade looked like a clean 27% gain — but what does she actually keep?

Tax rate 15%
